Celebrate Irish Literary Heritage with a Striking Portrait of Lady Augusta Gregory
Elevate your space with a timeless piece of Irish cultural history. This exquisite framed print features a compelling head-and-shoulders portrait of Lady Augusta Gregory (1852–1932), the esteemed dramatist, folklorist, and co-founder of the Abbey Theatre, captured by acclaimed Irish artist William Orpen around 1904. In this portrait, Orpen conveys not just a convincing likeness but also the intelligence, strength, and presence of a woman who shaped the Irish Literary Revival.
Though Lady Gregory did not begin writing professionally until nearly fifty, a chance meeting with poet W.B. Yeats profoundly redirected her life. Together, they collected local folklore around Kiltartan, Co. Galway—a collaboration that helped revive Irish storytelling and language. With Yeats, Edward Martyn, and Douglas Hyde, she co-founded the Irish Literary Theatre in 1899, later becoming an active Director of the Abbey Theatre, where she wrote over forty plays between 1901 and 1929.
Known for her deep nationalism, Lady Gregory learned the Irish language and even developed her own dramatic dialect, which she named ‘Kiltartanese’. Her home at Coole Park became a hub for major figures of the Irish literary movement, including Synge, Yeats, and Shaw.
William Orpen (1878–1931), one of Ireland’s most celebrated 20th-century artists, was also a deeply influential teacher. His life classes at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art helped shape a new generation of Irish talent. His portrait of Lady Gregory is a masterwork that reflects both the sitter’s cultural legacy and the artist’s unparalleled technical skill.
